forefront of our Philosophy of Care.
We seek to advance these rights in all aspects of the environment and the services we provide.
The home is run as an open and welcoming place to live for people of all backgrounds and walks of life, cultures and faiths.
We recognise that life in a communal setting and the need to accept help with personal tasks are inherently invasive of a person’s ability to enjoy the pleasure of being alone and undisturbed.
We therefore strive at all times to treat our residents with respect and to preserve their dignity and privacy by:
Anyone entering a resident’s room will always knock before entering.
Encouraging and supporting to make personal choices, to enjoy their privacy and to have their own personal space.
If private or personal issues arise the discussion takes place in a private environment.
Help and support is given in a proper and sensitive way with intimate care tasks.
Offering a range of locations around the home for residents to be alone or with selected others.
Providing locks on residents’ rooms.
Enabling privacy when using the telephone, opening and reading post and communicating with family, friends and others.
Treating each resident as a special and valued individual
Dignity is at the core of human rights and all staff trained to respect privacy and personhood.
The right to be listened to and have your voice heard is part of ‘being’ and our priority is to make that happen.
Our care takes into account each person’s individual needs and preferences, delivered with patience, dignity and respect at all times.
At The Firs we work to maximise the individual's abilities, by doing things with a person rather than doing things for them. We support the choices of the service-user with an understanding that risk taking is part of everyday life.
We focus on the individual and not on the disability, removing barriers to enable personhood to shine through by:
Promoting possibilities for residents to establish and retain contacts beyond the home.
Ensuring that individual records can be accessed and contributed to regarding their own care.
Exploring - with the resident, family, friends and other professionals - their individual life experiences and history.
Arranging activities and entertainment carefully planned to match individual assessed need to give enjoyment and a positive outcome.
